If I’m being honest, I don’t usually realize I’m off right away.

It sneaks up on me.

I get a little more tired. A little more irritable. Everything feels heavier than it should — and suddenly even small things feel like a lot.

That’s usually my sign.

The Old Me vs. The Current Me

The old version of me thought a “reset” had to be big.

A full plan. A perfect routine. A complete overhaul.

And because that felt overwhelming, I’d do… nothing.

I would beat myself up for not doing what needed to be done, while also not knowing where to begin. So instead, I’d do the “look busy, shift stuff around” thing — which, let’s be honest, usually just dug the rut a little deeper.

Now? I know better.

My go-to reset is simple. It’s gentle. And it’s absolutely not fancy.

Step One: I Pause (Even When I Don’t Want To)

The first thing I do is stop pushing.

I pause long enough to ask myself one question:

“What feels the hardest right now?”

Not what I should be doing.
Not what everyone else seems to handle effortlessly.

Just what feels heavy.

Sometimes the answer surprises me. Pausing gives me clarity– where pushing keep kicking the dust up and making it hard to see.

Step Two: I Do One Small Care Thing

I don’t try to fix everything.

I choose one small thing that helps my body or mind feel a little better.

That might look like:

  • Putting on lotion or cuticle oil
  • Drinking a full glass of water (and then another)
  • Washing my face and actually enjoying it (breath in that spa smell)
  • Changing my nail set
  • Turning on some music or a podcast
  • Sitting down for five quiet minutes

Nothing dramatic. Nothing Instagram-worthy.

Just something grounding.

Step Three: I Lower the Bar (On Purpose)

This part matters.

When I’m feeling off, I give myself permission to lower the bar.

Lower expectations.
Lower the noise.
Lower the pressure to be productive or polished.

Because pushing harder has never been what brings me back into balance.

This is hard. Perfectionism, want, and desire are tough opponents — but learning to lower the bar is necessary if I want to win that battle.

Why This Works for Me

This kind of reset works because it’s realistic.

It fits real life.
It doesn’t require motivation.
It doesn’t ask me to become a whole new version of myself.

It simply helps me return to me.

This Is the Tone You’ll Find Here

This is what The Not-So-Perfectly-Polished Post will always come back to:

  • Small habits over big fixes
  • Care over perfection
  • Real life over highlight reels
  • You over all else.

If you’re someone who feels off sometimes — tired, overwhelmed, stretched way too thin — you’re not broken.

You probably just need a gentler reset.

One Small Invitation

If today feels heavy, don’t fix everything.

Just pick one small thing.

That’s often where the shift begins.

And if you ever need the reminder, I’ll be right here — reminding you too. Its okay to put yourself first.
